Kappa Alpha Psi: A Legacy of Achievement and Impact

For over a century, Kappa Alpha Psi® Fraternity, Inc. has stood as a symbol of excellence, resilience, and service. More than just a Greek-letter organization, it is a living legacy that has profoundly shaped the lives of its members and the communities it serves. As one of the Divine Nine—the nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations that form the National Pan-Hellenic Council—Kappa Alpha Psi has played a pivotal role in fostering leadership, promoting achievement, and uplifting marginalized communities.

Born in Adversity, Built on Vision

Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on January 5, 1911, at Indiana University Bloomington, during a time when racial discrimination was deeply entrenched in American society. Black students at Indiana University faced systemic barriers, from being excluded from campus housing and facilities to enduring social ostracism and outright hostility. Despite these challenges, ten visionary men, led by Elder Watson Diggs and Byron K. Armstrong, came together to create a fraternity that would empower Black collegians to rise above their circumstances.

The founders of Kappa Alpha Psi were not content with merely creating a social organization. They envisioned a fraternity rooted in high ideals, Christian principles, and a commitment to "Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor." This ethos became the cornerstone of the fraternity, inspiring generations of members to strive for excellence in academics, leadership, and service.

A Legacy of Achievement

From its humble beginnings, Kappa Alpha Psi has grown into a global organization with over 250,000 members and 700 chapters across the United States and 13 countries. Its members have excelled in diverse fields, including civil rights, sports, entertainment, politics, and business. Notable members include tennis legend Arthur Ashe, comedian Cedric the Entertainer, and activist-athlete Colin Kaepernick, all of whom embody the fraternity's commitment to excellence and social impact.

The fraternity's influence extends far beyond its membership. Through its philanthropic arm, the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, the organization has supported scholarships, youth development programs, and community service initiatives. Its flagship program, Guide Right, provides mentorship and guidance to young people, equipping them with the tools to succeed academically and professionally.

Impact on the Divine Nine and Beyond

As the second-oldest historically Black intercollegiate fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi has been a trailblazer within the Divine Nine. Its emphasis on achievement and service has set a standard for other organizations, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration among the member fraternities and sororities. Together, the Divine Nine have been instrumental in advancing civil rights, promoting education, and addressing social injustices.

Kappa Alpha Psi's commitment to service is evident in its community outreach efforts. Local chapters engage in activities such as feeding the homeless, mentoring youth, and raising awareness about public health issues. Nationally, the fraternity has partnered with organizations like the United Negro College Fund and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, raising millions of dollars to support education and medical research.

A Fraternity of Firsts

Kappa Alpha Psi has a history of breaking barriers and setting precedents. It was the first Black Greek-letter organization to establish a chapter at Indiana University and the first to incorporate as a national body. Its monthly publication, The Kappa Alpha Psi Journal, debuted in 1914 and has been a consistent platform for sharing the fraternity's achievements and initiatives.

The fraternity's name itself reflects its resilience and adaptability. Originally called Kappa Alpha Nu, the name was changed to Kappa Alpha Psi in 1915 to address derogatory misinterpretations and to solidify its identity as a distinguished Greek-letter organization.

Kappa Alpha Psi's impact is not confined to the United States. Its international chapters and members have contributed to global causes, from disaster relief efforts to military service. The fraternity's commitment to service and achievement transcends borders, making it a force for positive change worldwide.
